RAJOURI, also called Rajouri is small town and district headquarters situated at about 150 K. Mtrs. from Jammu in the north-western Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir state, in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent. It was referred to as Rajpuri in ‘Kalhana’s Rajatarangini’ (12th.centuary A.D.). In the ‘Pakhtun’ intervention of 1947, almost the entire population of the town was massacred. ’Tatta Pani’, a hot sulphur water springs noted for their medicinal properties, and ‘Shahadara Sharif’, a Muslim pilgrimage centre, are located near the town. Rajouri is located on the road connecting Poonch in the Indian-held sector in the north and Jammu in the south. The ancient ‘Mughal Road’ used by Emperor Jahangir on his way to Srinagar (Kashmir Valley) passes through Rajouri through Poonch and Uri. Emperor Jahangir died on his way back from Kashmir Valley at ‘Chingus’ about 10 Kms away from Rajouri. The surrounding region of Rajouri is largely composed of the northwest-southeast-trending ‘Pir Panjal Ranges’ with and average elevation of 9,000 feet (2,745 metres) of the Middle Himalayas. The ‘Salani River’ and all the river tributaries flowing through the terraced hill slops and the river valleys of Rajouri join the principal river ‘The Chenab’.
